Three Times A Charm with Theresa Kay

Welcome to Three Times A Charm. I love introducing my readers to new authors, illustrators, bloggers, agents, editors or promoters from the children’s publishing industry.

Today’s guest is author, Theresa Kay. Thanks for joining us, Theresa. Please tell us a little about you.

When I was a kid, I was a bit of an oddball. I preferred books to television, was never really up to date on the latest music, and I liked hanging out in my room with whatever cast of fictional characters inhabited the book I was currently reading. This early love for reading also created an early love for writing. I penned my first story at age seven or eight and I wrote through most of my school age years.

Then, for a while, life got in the way and I put aside my hopes of becoming a writer. It wasn’t until 2010 when I got my first Kindle and started reading indie books that I started thinking that maybe my dream was still possible. After a few NaNoWriMo challenges (50k words in 30 days), I finally put together something that I thought was at least revisable. That project, after a lot of invaluable help and encouragement from my writing group, became Broken Skies.

I’m a member of the Rebel Writers (www.therebelwriters.com) and I live in central Virginia with my husband, two kids, two dogs and one cat. By day, I’m a full-time paralegal and my evenings and weekends are spent squeezing writing time in between carting kids around and reading almost anything I can get my hands on.

 We’d love to hear more about Broken Skies.

My first novel, Broken Skies, is a YA sci-fi story with a dystopian undertone. It tells the story of Jax Mitchell, a seventeen-year-old girl living in post-apocalyptic Virginia who must rescue her twin brother when he’s kidnapped by aliens. It’s the first book in a planned trilogy and the second book, Fractured Suns, is expected to be published in September.

I also have another project in the works called Bright Beyond. It’s an NA sci-fi serial that will tell the story of Eva Braebel, a stasis-shocked pilot who wakes up when the transport ship she’s on crash land on an unknown planet. Dark Expanse, a prequel short story to this series is available on Amazon now and the first episode of Bright Beyond is expected to be published in June.

The first three books that come to mind are: Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, a perfect blend of romance and historical fiction with just a hint of sci-fi…and it has Jamie Fraser. Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi, gorgeous, lyrical writing filled with amazing imagery. Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo, a unique YA fantasy with intriguing characters and a Russian twist. (OMG – Jamie!)

I Want More – The Story Behind the Story, I Am Me

When an author writes a novel, they make up the characters and the story, but the character, setting, story arc doesn’t just appear out of nowhere. There is usually a story behind the story. Often several little stories, which an author tweaks and cobbles together to mold into the main character or the supporting characters. Sometimes they will set their story in a real place. Other times they will create a fictional place that has aspects of places they’ve visited or lived. In my series, The Story Behind the Story , I will share some of the stories behind my stories. Though I have never outright written a person I know into a book, I have definitely been influenced by those who have crossed my path, as well as places I’ve visited or even simply passed through throughout the many years I’ve been on this earth. Robot Writing - What It Is & How to Avoid It

Many beginner writers fall into the habit of what I like to refer to as “robot writing.” It’s when you basically write your scenes like a grocery list. Ex: Marcy stood and walked across the room. Then she picked up the candle stick to inspect it. She blinked when she noticed the spot of dried blood. Marcy dropped the candlestick and ran from the room. I call it robot writing because when I'm reading it I tend to fall into a robotic pattern and start to sound like the robot from the old Lost In Space series. "Danger. Danger. Will Robinson." You may as well put numbers in front of each sentence: First Marcy stood and walked across the room. Second she picked up the candlestick to inspect it.
