Kimber Leigh is addicted to romance, videogames, superheroes, villains, and chocolate—not necessarily in that order. (If she has to choose, she’ll take a chocolate covered superhero!)

Her debut novel, Shadow Fire, is the first book in the Light Chronicles series. Watch for book two, Stolen Moon, a standalone sequel, coming August 2014. Also watch for Tortured Souls, a YA paranormal romance, coming July 14, 2014.

Cover Reveal - Polar Opposites by Kai Strand

I'm so excited to bring you the cover of POLAR OPPOSITES: Super Villain Academy, Book 2

The supers are balanced. Academies have altered their curriculum to teach both sides of the super power spectrum. All’s well in the super world. Right?

When Mystic kidnaps Oceanus, Jeff learns it isn’t all right. Turning to the newly balanced supers for assistance, he panics to find they’ve done nothing to rescue Oceanus. When no ransom request follows, he worries Mystic’s plan never included returning his girlfriend. Frustrated, he’s forced to work with the only super willing to help. Oceanus’ ex-villain, ex-boyfriend, Set.

Mystic isn’t the only one hiding something. Nothing about Jeff is balanced. Temper flares result in scorched clothing or flying furniture, and his charm has become an indiscriminate people-magnet.

Jeff is convinced, or maybe just hopeful, that his lack of control is directly related to Oceanus being gone. But will he and Set find her before Jeff loses control completely and will they find her alive?

Three Times A Charm with Krystalyn Drown

Welcome to Three Times A Charm. Introducing readers to new authors, illustrators, bloggers, agents, editors or promoters from the children’s publishing industry makes me happy.

Today’s guest is author, Krystalyn Drown. Thanks for joining us, Kriystalyn. Please tell us a little about you.

I spent thirteen years working at Walt Disney World in a variety of roles: entertainer, talent coordinator, and character captain. My degree in theatre as well as many, many hours spent in a dance studio, helped with my job there.

My various other day jobs have included working in zoology at Sea World, as an elementary teacher, and currently as a support technician for a website. In the evenings, I do mad writing challenges with my sister, who is also an author.

I live near Orlando, Florida with my husband, son, a were cat, and a Yorkie with a Napoleon complex.

What a fascinating background. That must feed well into writing fiction. Speaking of, we’d love to hear about your book.

All Riesa Adair wants is a normal life. With the end of high school only months away and an outstanding GPA to bolster her college plans, that doesn't seem like too much to ask. Unfortunately, the voices screaming in her head keep getting in the way. Somewhere between her summer in a mental institution, and her stepfather's attempt at an exorcism, she's learned to keep quiet about her situation. But, pretending to be normal hasn't prevented the spirit world from taking notice of her. Both sides of an ever-present war have focused in on her. Now she’ll need all the help she can get to escape a powerful spirit threatening to fulfill a prophecy that endangers the entire human world.

I recommend my book to readers who like:
Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead
Strange Angels series by Lili St. Crow

Now, for the Threes. Share with us your top 3’s to help us know you a little better.

  • Top 3 books you recommend reading and why you recommend them.
The Secret Garden by Francis Hodgson Burnett – This is my favorite book ever. It has the perfect combination for me – Yorkshire moors, a gothic mansion, and secrets waiting to be uncovered.
Confessions of Georgia Nicholson series by Louise Rennison – These books made me laugh. A lot.
The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater – I love the characterization in all of her books, but these characters stand out to me as my favorites.

  • Top 3 tools of the trade you couldn’t live without.
iPad – It's easy to take just about anywhere. That, coupled with a small keyboard, is perfect for when I write at my local bookstore.
Thesaurus.com – for when the word I need is just out of reach
Pajama pants – I like being comfy.

  • Top 3 snacks to munch on while working.
Jelly beans – preferably Jelly Belly, but I like Starburst ones too
Chocolate – the good stuff from candy shops, not the kind that tastes like wax
Sandwiches – because I often write on my lunch break

Three Times A Charm with Theresa Kay

Welcome to Three Times A Charm. I love introducing my readers to new authors, illustrators, bloggers, agents, editors or promoters from the children’s publishing industry.

Today’s guest is author, Theresa Kay. Thanks for joining us, Theresa. Please tell us a little about you.

When I was a kid, I was a bit of an oddball. I preferred books to television, was never really up to date on the latest music, and I liked hanging out in my room with whatever cast of fictional characters inhabited the book I was currently reading. This early love for reading also created an early love for writing. I penned my first story at age seven or eight and I wrote through most of my school age years.

Then, for a while, life got in the way and I put aside my hopes of becoming a writer. It wasn’t until 2010 when I got my first Kindle and started reading indie books that I started thinking that maybe my dream was still possible. After a few NaNoWriMo challenges (50k words in 30 days), I finally put together something that I thought was at least revisable. That project, after a lot of invaluable help and encouragement from my writing group, became Broken Skies.

I’m a member of the Rebel Writers (www.therebelwriters.com) and I live in central Virginia with my husband, two kids, two dogs and one cat. By day, I’m a full-time paralegal and my evenings and weekends are spent squeezing writing time in between carting kids around and reading almost anything I can get my hands on.

We’d love to hear more about Broken Skies.

My first novel, Broken Skies, is a YA sci-fi story with a dystopian undertone. It tells the story of Jax Mitchell, a seventeen-year-old girl living in post-apocalyptic Virginia who must rescue her twin brother when he’s kidnapped by aliens. It’s the first book in a planned trilogy and the second book, Fractured Suns, is expected to be published in September.

I also have another project in the works called Bright Beyond. It’s an NA sci-fi serial that will tell the story of Eva Braebel, a stasis-shocked pilot who wakes up when the transport ship she’s on crash land on an unknown planet. Dark Expanse, a prequel short story to this series is available on Amazon now and the first episode of Bright Beyond is expected to be published in June.

I recommend my book to readers who like:
The Lux series by Jennifer Armentrout
Angelfall by Susan Ee
Partials by Dan Wells

Ooo, those recs sure get my attention! I’ll definitely be checking out Broken Skies! Okay, now the Threes. Share with us your top 3’s to help us know you a little better.

  • Top 3 books you recommend reading and why you recommend them.

The first three books that come to mind are: Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, a perfect blend of romance and historical fiction with just a hint of sci-fi…and it has Jamie Fraser. Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi, gorgeous, lyrical writing filled with amazing imagery. Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo, a unique YA fantasy with intriguing characters and a Russian twist. (OMG – Jamie!)

  • Top 3 tools of the trade you couldn’t live without.

Scrivener, Spotify, and an ergonomic keyboard.

  • Top 3 leisure activities.

Reading. Binge watching Netflix. Hiking.

Three Times A Charm with Marva Dasef

Welcome to Three Times A Charm. I love introducing my readers to new authors, illustrators, bloggers, agents, editors or promoters from the children’s publishing industry.

Today’s guest is author, Marva Dasef. Thanks for joining us, Marva. Please tell us a little about you.

Thank you, Kai, for giving me a little of your valuable web space. It’s appreciated.

I’m a retired tech writer now making my way in fiction. Primarily I write fantasy books for kids from ten to 100. When I first began my authorial career, I wrote lots of short stories, and have had more than 40 stories published in various on-line and print magazines. In 2007, I decided to try for a longer book via NaNoWriMo. I got my 50K words (many of them to be tossed out). That gave me the confidence to write longer works. Most of my books are in novella length (35K-50K) because that’s the right length for younger readers (and the length I prefer on my ereader). Since my first published book (actually a collection of short stories), I’ve published ten books in print and ebook format. Most recently, I’m having my books produced for the audio market.

Congratulations on the audio books. That’s exciting. Now, we’d love to hear about your series, The Witches of Galdorheim.

The Witches of Galdorheim is my pride and joy. The books are contemporary fantasies following the exploits of a young witch as she learns to use her magical powers. The switch-up is she and her family live on an island in the arctic, the home of the witches who escaped the inquisition in the 15th C. Everyone on the island is a witch. Katrina, my main character, has plenty of magical power, but everything she tries ends up a disaster, hence the first book’s title, “Bad Spelling.” I think the tag lines for the three books give a good idea of the story and tone:

Bad Spelling: A klutzy witch, a shaman's curse, a quest to save her family. Can Kat find her magic in time?

Midnight Oil: Shipwrecked on a legendary island, how can a witch rescue her boyfriend if she can’t even phone home?

Scotch Broom: A magical trip to Stonehenge lands a witch in the Otherworld where an ancient goddess is up to no good.

I recommend my books to readers who like Terry Pratchett’s Disc World series, J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, or Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series.

Now, for the Threes. Share with us your top 3’s to help us know you a little better.

  • Top 3 books you recommend reading and why you recommend them.

I recommend any or all of the books by Pratchett, Rowling, and Riordan. I read them all and can’t choose only three.

  • Top 3 tools of the trade you couldn’t live without.

Open Office (word processor) and MS Paint for production. My books could not exist without the internet. I research...a lot.

  • Top 3 favorite places.

For visiting, I’m always willing to return to the Oregon coast and Great Britain. Otherwise, home is where my heart is.

Sometimes progress in writing has very little to do with word count or submissions. I haven't produced a lot of new material this month, but I was busy publishing a novella, so I'm not too concerned about my lack of production. The publishing side of things is so very different from the creative side. Since it was my first indie title, I had a learning curve to work through. Obviously, nothing insurmountable. My husband is fond of the saying, "If it was easy, everybody would be doing it." Well, it seems like everybody is self-publishing, so I knew it had to be (if not easy) doable. Tomorrow will be a week since I released the book. Don't miss the last week of my mini blog tour or your chance to win fun stuff. I'm working on edits for the second novella in the series. I tentatively plan to release it at the beginning of August.

I also got preliminary artwork for my Polar Opposites cover, so things are moving there too. The book, which is book 2 in my Super Villain Academy series, is supposed to release next month. I'm excited about that.

For those of you struggling to stay motivated, I'd like to share one of my most basic methods. I use it when I'm faced with doing things I don't like, such as editing or dusting. It is the "How do you eat an elephant?" method. The answer to that is, "One bite at a time." That's how I start, and then finish, less exciting responsibilities. I simply start--without looking at the entire scope--and work my way through, one bite at a time. I almost always finish sooner than I expect to. I told you it was a basic method. But sometimes we need to go back to basics to do the hard work.

What is your 'go to' method of motivation? What keeps you on track?

When Quincy takes his first trail ride in the desert, the horse he chooses for a trail buddy to guide him turns out to be a bully. The story of the day’s ride along with the striking illustrations, take kids into the desert of the Southwest with its array of wild animals and breathtaking scenery.

The Only Boy by Jordan Locke-Book Blast Giveaway

The only boy  The Only Boy by Jordan Locke Mary is stuck in Section One, living with three hundred women in a crumbling hospital. She wonders what life was like two centuries ago, before the Cleansing wiped out all the men. But the rules—the Matriarch's senseless rules—prevent her from exploring the vacant city to find out. Taylor's got a dangerous secret: he's a boy. His compound's been destroyed, and he's been relocated to Section One. Living under the Matriarch means giving up possessions, eating canned food and avoiding all physical contact. Baggy clothes hide his flat chest and skinny legs, but if anyone discovers what lies beneath, he'll be exiled. Maybe even executed. Mary's never seen a boy—the Matriarch cut the pictures of men from the textbooks—and she doesn't suspect Taylor's secret. If she knew, she might understand the need to stop the girls from teasing him. If she knew, she might realize why she breaks the rules, just to be near him. Then again, she might be frightened to death of him. Taylor should go. The Matriarch is watching his every move. But running means leaving Mary—and braving the land beyond the compound's boundaries.
